Makenzie Meehan

LAMFT | Licensed Associate Marriage and Family Therapist (In supervision toward clinical licensure)

Sometimes therapy can feel intimidating, especially when it means facing parts of yourself that you’ve learned to hide. One of the most important aspects of finding a therapist is finding a space where you truly feel safe. Safety can look like feeling present and grounded, expressing your inner thoughts and feelings, and showing up as your whole self. With openness, collaboration, and a little humor, we can create a space that is nonjudgemental and affirming. Together, we’ll explore the protective walls you’ve built to get through difficult experiences that once served you and can now be understood and released with self compassion.

As a queer, systemic therapist, I strive to create a collaborative and meaningful relationship where you can start to feel comfortable to open up. Whether you’re exploring your sexuality, struggling with depression and/or anxiety, working through relationship challenges, or seeking greater self-understanding, I’m here to provide a space of acceptance and affirmation. With cultural competence and cultural humility, I believe our identities of sexuality, gender, race, and class all intersect to shape how we move through the world and how we relate to others. My goal is to help you understand yourself more deeply so you can begin to name and honor your own needs, both in relationships with yourself and with others.

My approach to therapy is grounded in safety, connection, and curiosity. I work with individuals and couples from diverse backgrounds to uncover generational patterns, relationship dynamics, intimacy issues and unhelpful coping strategies that may no longer serve you and/or your partner. I help you connect the dots between your past and present experiences drawing from Emotionally Focused Therapy, Narrative Therapy, with a trauma-informed lens. Through tools like genograms, psychoeducation, and collaborative exploration, we will work together toward healing, growth, and meaningful change.

For LGBTQIA+ couples, I offer a space to dismantle hetronormative expectations that can influence relationship roles, explore desire discrepancies, and address internalized shame or hypervigilance that may stem from living in a world not always affirming of queer identity and love. I also help provide psychoeducation on queer sexual health and resources for affirming care, helping couples build stronger, more intentional relationships.

When I am not practicing therapy you can find me exploring the city in search of the coziest coffee shops, the funkiest thrift shops, or the coolest restaurants. If I’m not exploring, you can find me watching a bravo show with my black cat cuddled next to me.
