ADHD & the Intersection of

Self-Identity

A 12-week Support & Skills Group for Neurodivergent Individuals

This group is for individuals diagnosed with ADHD and other forms of neurodivergence who want to explore how their diagnosis intersects with their sense of self. Many people with ADHD have internalized harmful labels — “lazy,” “unmotivated,” “too emotional” — that can distort self-perception and hinder growth. This group provides a space to unpack those narratives and reconnect with your authentic identity.

Over 12 weeks, participants will engage in both process-oriented discussions and skills-based coaching. Together, we’ll examine the stories others have told us, challenge internalized stigma, and develop tools for emotional regulation, time management, and self-compassion. The goal is to build a more accurate, affirming self-understanding — grounded in your strengths, not stereotypes.

Week 1 – Introduction & Lived Experience
How has ADHD / neurodivergence impacted your life? Exploring early experiences, strengths, challenges, and patterns while establishing group norms and safety.

Week 2 – Labels & Internalized Narratives
What labels have others imposed on you because of your neurodivergence? How have these labels shaped your self-concept, expectations, shame, or identity?

Week 3 – Masking & Authenticity
How do you mask in different settings? How does masking take a toll on your sense of self and energy? Are there spaces where you feel safe unmasking?

Week 4 – Spoon Theory & Energy Use
Navigating a “normal” world as a neurodivergent person takes energy. What activities siphon more spoons than others? Noticing patterns without judgment.

Week 5 – Rejection Sensitivity Dysphoria (RSD)
How do you experience rejection sensitivity dysphoria? How have internalized labels reinforced your rejection response? Psychoeducation on RSD as a visceral, often out-of-body nervous system reaction (fight, flight, freeze, shutdown, dissociation) rather than a cognitive choice. Exploring the impact of perceived rejection on identity, avoidance, and relationships.

Week 6 – Pathological Demand Avoidance (PDA)
Neurodivergence can create the perception that everything takes effort. When you don’t want to complete a task, what do you feel in your body? Exploring resistance, overwhelm, and nervous system responses.

Week 7 – Mindfulness (DBT Foundations)
Introducing mindfulness from DBT. How can mindfulness help us stay on task while working through discomfort around unpleasant tasks, better understand emotions, and feel more in flow with life?

Week 8 – Time Blindness & Mindful Coping
How does time blindness affect you? Using mindfulness to cope with time distortion and reduce shame around productivity, lateness, and follow-through.

Week 9 – Relationships & Communication
How does being neurodivergent impact relationships? Using DBT communication skills to create more balance while holding the tension between how disability impacts partners and practicing self-compassion for who you are.

Week 10 – Understanding Emotions (DBT Model)
Neurodivergence impacts how emotions are experienced, often contributing to emotion dysregulation. Learning to describe, understand, and validate emotions to support regulation.

Week 11 – Balancing Self-Acceptance and Change
How do we set realistic goals while balancing growth and self-compassion? Exploring the difference between meaningful change and internalized ableism.

Week 12 – Reflection & Closing
What have you learned about yourself through this group? How has the group helped you challenge unhealthy stigma and narratives about ADHD and neurodivergence?

Co-led by a licensed clinician and pre-licensed therapist, this group offers connection, validation, and practical strategies for navigating life with a neurodivergent brain.
